The two teens, who were not related, were passengers in a speeding car being driven
by Felisberto DePina, 18, when the car careened out of control on Brockton's Menlo Street and slammed into three parked cars
and a porch. Police say DePina, [Ruth Barros]' boyfriend, was racing a car being driven by 18-year-old Isaulino Goncalves-Rosa
at speeds of up to 90 mph.
Felisberto DePina, 18, was charged last night by Brockton police with two counts
of negligent vehicular homicide, possession of marijuana, driving to endanger and speeding. Brockton Police Lt. William Conlon
said marijuana was found in the car and that police may subpoena DePina's hospital records to possibly tack on driving under
the influence charges.
Principal Eugene Marrow said [Ruth Barros]' death hit the students and faculty
hard. She was a member of the Cape Verdean Club and participated in the Peers Helping Peers program. She also worked part-
time at D'Angelo's sub shop.
Roses mark the site. Friends said, "She was always smiling" and "He was
the sweetest one." A relative held a framed picture of Ruth Barros and told a reporter: "She was just a kid. She deserved
a chance."
